When rooftop installation is not available or roof space is obstructed, pole mounts are an effective alternative for generating solar energy via solar panels. Pole mounts generally provide the most efficient engineering and design to effectively satisfy smaller energy needs; these mounts can be situated wherever there is solid ground, being driven directly into the ground or embedded in concrete, and roof installation is also possible. A single pole mount can support up to 20 solar panels, in either side-of-pole or top-of-pole styles. Tall poles allow for continued use of the space underneath the panels.

Pole mounts are extremely reliable, efficient, and low-maintenance, with a typical lifetime of at least 30 years. Solar panels may be mounted using a fixed rack or a tracker, depending on the location of the property and alignment with the sun; fixed racks hold panels stationary while trackers tilt panels as needed in the direction of the sun for maximum exposure. Installed panels may be either flat plate collectors or concentrating collectors, depending on the volume of energy to be produced.

Photovoltaic cell technology naturally converts sun light energy into electricity at the atomic level by the photovoltaic effect. A mounting site of at least 2,500 square feet can typically host a 30 kilowatt (kW) solar power system that will generate approximately $6,000 of solar energy each year.
